TRIGGER WARNINGS: PERIOD-TYPICAL HOMOPHOBIA, CONVERSION THERAPY, MURDER, CHILD ABUSE, DOMESTIC ABUSE, CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT, DRUGGING, VIOLENT DEATH OF AN ANIMAL. Born July 14th, 1876 at 5:26am to Ivan and Dahlia Gillies, James was born into privilege, a fact of which he was astutely aware. Rich, white, Christian male - two loving parents....for seven years. James and Dahlia weren't sure what exactly changed, but Ivan quickly became cruel. Blood, spit, and tears stained the wooden floor for years to come. When James was ten, he befriended the boy who moved in across the street - Bobby was his name - and Ivan quickly decided the two of them were becoming "too close." Words like pansy were starting to be thrown around, and James was forbidden from seeing his friend again. However, when beatings weren't enough to deter him, Ivan decided to send him off to a minister in Markham named Jacob. Jacob tried exorcisms, drugging, and hypnosis, but he deemed none of them effective. His next option was the most extreme, to sexually assault James - James vaguely remembers the logic. If he associated "sex" with men with pain, then he wouldn't want to do it. He vividly remembers Jacob yelling in his face, his hot breath and spit against his skin. That night, while Jacob was fast asleep, he took off running and didn't stop until he was knocking at his own front door. James expected Ivan to do something when he had told him what Minister Jacob had done. Or, at the very least, be angry. Instead, he decided perhaps Jacob's ideas had merit, and began assaulting James as well when Dahlia was away or asleep. For a couple of years, James became almost completely mute - speak when spoken to, and only if completely unavoidable. He'd become obedient, if you asked Ivan - internally, Dahlia believed Jacob had somehow broken his spirit. Dahlia wouldn't find out the truth for two years to come. However, when she did, all she'd remember is seeing red as she plunged the sharpened end of a cross repeatedly into her husband's back. Gillies blood would seep into their floors for the last time that day.

James can't be sure how long Ivan's body sat in their spare room, in front of their broken grandfather clock, or how long their cat - 'broken' as Ivan used to call her because she didn't meow - sat in that room with him. All he remembers is passing the door, hearing the strange noise inside. Creaking open the door to find her surviving off of his father's decaying flesh. The memory goes black there, and when it returns, poor Dosia's fur and blood is staining his hands. His vision comes back into focus, and he can feel his mother looming behind him - staring at him, for the first time in horror. fear. It was then that Dahlia decided the two of them needed to move out of that house, paying off the coroner to rule Ivan's death an accident. [...] When James was eighteen, he began at The University of Toronto where he met Robert Perry - friend, roommate, partner in crime, lover. He was slowly settling into comfort with exploring his sexuality again. Meanwhile, his childhood best friend, Annie Jackson had just found herself pregnant with the child's father nowhere to be found. In a desperate attempt to save herself from 19th century scrutiny, she pleaded with James to "marry" her and act as her child's father, to which he agreed. The little girl, Arabella Gillies, was born June 16, 1895. In 1896, James and Robert devised a plan to test their knowledge of applied physics...by rigging a device to kill their physics professor, Samuel Bennett. It was the perfect plan, and they had made a rival Professor Godfrey look good for the crime. However, Detective William Murdoch was closing in on them - he'd convinced Robert that James was out to kill him. Robert was cracking right before James's eyes, and so he did exactly what Detective Murdoch had convinced him he was going to do - killed Robert to save his own neck, and framed Professor Godfrey for both murders. Through the rest of his time at The University of Toronto, James interns as an assistant at the morgue alongside Dr. Julia Ogden until Julia leaves her post at the morgue to go to Buffalo in 1897, leaving James overseeing the morgue mostly alone after he graduates with the coming and going of Dr Rebecca James, Emily Grace, and Ms Violet Hart.

  1. James is a highly intelligent, wealthy, and dangerous person. with vast resources and an ever-expanding inventory of skills, there is almost nothing outside of its capability. She is not only a murderer & torturer, but a con man, escape artist, and master of disguise. from 1896 to 1906, he works alongside Dr. Julia Ogden & the comers and goers of the morgue, first as an intern and then as head coroner until being caught by P.I. Freddie Pink in collaboration with Dr. Ogden.

  2. James & Annie are a lavender marriage, almost entirely for Annie's sake. They get along well enough and are touchy with each other on account of being best friends, that most people in the 1900s don't bother to question it, but other eras tend to clock James as uninterested in women quite easily.

  3. HOWEVER, Your muse will not know that Arabella is not James's biological daughter unless he has discussed this fact with them. In every way that matters, he considers himself her father.

  1. Contrary to popular belief, James has a moral code. It's up to you and your muse to figure out what the hell that code is. However, he and I will both tell you that among this code is the fact that causing any harm to a child is entirely forbidden, and anyone who does so may very well be his next victim.
